Linen towels are perfect for each kitchen – they look great, are highly absorbent and can make your kitchen look luxurious. Despite all the positive features, it is really easy to ruin them while washing. In order to help you keep your kitchen towels looking new and fresh we have selected the most important steps of washing them.

Let your kitchen towels air dry before putting them in the laundry hamper

The most common mistake people make when washing linen kitchen towels is putting them in the laundry basket all dirty and wet. This is extremely important if you have one laundry hamper for all your laundry – clothes, towels, etc. Laundry baskets are the perfect place for bacteria and germs to spread. Putting wet kitchen towels in your laundry hamper will cause them to mildew and get smelly. Let them air dry through the night and put them in the laundry basket once they are dry.

Wash towels at least once a week

It is very important to wash your kitchen towels regularly. Firstly, you can easily run out of towels if you forget to wash them at least once a week. If you are cooking more often you can easily use up 2-4 kitchen towels per day. Furthermore, it is not good for your health to keep dirty kitchen towels, since they can cause food-borne illness. It is especially risky if you use them to clean the table that you put raw meat on.

Sort laundry loads by color

First of all, kitchen towels need to be washed in their own load and not together with the rest of your laundry. Secondly, linen kitchen towels, just like any other towels, tend to absorb water and colors. That is why it is crucially important to wash white and light colored towels separately from the dark ones. Dark towels tend to fade out with time. Light colored towels will look bright and fresh if you wash them with light ones, but if you wash them with dark ones, they will all look dirty and gray.

Don’t use fabric softener when washing your kitchen towels

You can surely use fabric softener for other laundry items, but it should be avoided with kitchen towels. Liquid fabric softener puts a filmy coating on the laundry and that is not always a good thing. The coating is supposed to protect the fabric, but when used with towels it prevents them from getting completely clean.
